Huikala LLC, a Joint Venture between Pelatron and PIKA International
Pelatron and PIKA International, a SBA certified SDB, and a successful Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC) formed HUIKALA, LLC, a joint venture to access environmental remediation markets, and open doors to obtaining larger value contracts in Hawaii, mainland United States and the Pacific Basin.
PIKA is an experienced munitions response firm with over 100 UXO technicians and supporting disciplines performing on various U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Navy contracts. PIKA has developed one of the most comprehensive munitions response programs of any firm in the country regardless of size.
Pelatron has experienced Subject Matter Experts with deep experience managing large UXO removal projects and scientists who develop sensor technologies in the detection of explosive compounds for UXO clean up and FUDS remediation projects.
Huikala offers experience working on numerous MEC clearance, environmental remediation, and scrap handling projects that involved harsh terrain and archaeological/cultural influences. The Joint Venture brings new technologies to improve project efficiencies and lower costs.
HUIKALA, LLC makes Pelatron the only 8(a) Munitions and Explosives of Concern Action Response contractor that is based in Hawaii.
Demilitarization
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL) developed a method to determine the remaining effectiveness of stabilizers in military-use propellants using a chemical process called thin-layer chromatography (TLC).
UXO and Munitions Constituents Sensor Technology
Working with LLNL, Pelatron expanded this technology to the detection of explosive compounds. TLC capabilities will be used as an innovative technology for quality control of munitions presenting potential explosive hazard (MPPEH), munitions debris (MD), and munitions constituents (MC) that are collected and processed prior to leaving the range to the scrap dealers.
The TLC technology will also have a major impact in screening for explosives in FUDS remediation projects in the U.S. and other UXO projects around the world. Using a less complex process, TLC field kits produce qualitative and quantitative results that are faster and cheaper than existing methods.
Cultural Significance of Huikala
Huikala is a Hawaiian word that means “to absolve entirely, forgive all faults, excuse, cleanse and purify morally; pardon, atonement, absolution; ceremonial cleansing”.
At the center of the Native Hawaiian value system is the concept of “mālama ‘āina”,to care for the land. Hawaiians are bound to every element of nature; plants, animals, mountains, ocean and the sky, by a spiritual force or “mana”. Completely interdependent for its shared survival, mana instills a respect and sense of stewardship in the Hawaiian people. HUIKALA, LLC’s core mission is to practice the concept of “mālama ‘āina” to “huikala” or cleanse Hawaiian and Pacific lands of UXO and chemical weapons so once again their spiritual forces can burn and be returned to the people who were entrusted by the ancient gods for its care
